The AI week, for a retail store director

A real edition, written for: Retail Store Director

The one thing

CRM and clienteling tooling is being repackaged around AI agents, so write down what your boutique actually needs before head office picks for you.

Pricing01

Salesforce repackaged its sales and service editions into three tiers

Salesforce replaced its sales and service packaging with three new editions. Core, Advanced and Max now apply to Agentforce Sales, Service and Industries. Each tier bundles AI agents, Slack, embedded analytics, data security and the Premier Success Plan. Core lists at $195 per user per month and Advanced at $395. Max stays at $550, the same price as the earlier Agentforce 1 Edition. Existing Agentforce 1 customers can move to Max at no extra cost. Each tier carries a set allowance of Flex Credits for running agents. Industry edition pricing takes effect later in the fall. Pricing on legacy editions stays unchanged for current customers. Salesforce says Max editions will later include Headless 360 capacity.

Why it matters for you

Clienteling records usually sit in a CRM your group IT buys centrally. That contract shape just changed.

  • AI agents, Slack, analytics and support now come bundled instead of bought separately
  • Existing customers keep old pricing, so nothing moves unless someone renegotiates
  • Your leverage is describing what the boutique actually needs from clienteling before the renewal conversation

Try this

Write a one-page list of what your clienteling system fails to do today, and send it to whoever owns the CRM contract.

Paste this into your AI tool

I direct a flagship retail boutique with a team of thirty. Here are the clienteling tasks my sales staff do by hand or badly: [list them in your own words, e.g. logging client preferences after a fitting, remembering purchase anniversaries]. Turn this into a one-page brief for our head office IT team. Structure it as: what happens today, what it costs us in missed follow-ups, and what I need a system to do instead. Plain business language, no technical terms, under 400 words.

Salesforce sales data can now be worked on from inside a chat assistant

Salesforce and Anthropic announced Claudeforce, which connects Sales Cloud data, workflows and security controls into Claude Cowork through Salesforce-hosted connector servers. Sales teams can use 37 packaged sales skills from inside Claude rather than moving through Salesforce screens. Forrester advises regulated firms with compliance-driven sales processes to wait, and notes the two products must be bought under separate contracts with usage-based costs that are hard to predict.

Why it matters for you

Sellers can run deal prep and pipeline questions by asking, instead of clicking through CRM screens. That is the clienteling friction on your floor.

  • Salesforce permissions still apply, so staff only see what they already could
  • Forrester tells regulated firms to wait, and it needs two separate contracts
  • Useful to you now as evidence of where CRM interfaces are heading, not as something to buy

Try this

Ask your CRM owner whether chat-based access to client records is on their roadmap for next year.

Release03

Transcription dropped to a tenth of the price, with speaker labels

Microsoft AI released MAI-Transcribe-2, a speech-to-text model, on Thursday. The launch price is 10 cents per hour of audio, called an early-bird rate. Microsoft has not named an end date or a standard price. The model covers 60 languages and handles noisy, overlapping real-world audio. It labels who is speaking, timestamps each word and accepts custom word lists. A verbatim mode keeps filler words for legal and compliance use. It also follows conversations that switch language mid-sentence. Microsoft claims first place on the FLEURS multilingual benchmark and second on Artificial Analysis. It says the model runs five to ten times faster than rivals from OpenAI, Google and ElevenLabs. The announcement says nothing about real-time transcription, speaker-labelling accuracy or data retention.

Why it matters for you

Client conversations on your floor are where the clienteling detail lives. Capturing them just got cheap enough to bother with.

  • It labels who is speaking and handles languages switching mid-sentence, which matches a Swiss boutique's floor
  • Recording clients needs consent and a privacy review before anything gets tried
  • The realistic first use is your own team meetings, not client conversations

Try this

Record your next team briefing on your phone and have ChatGPT turn the notes into follow-up actions per person.

Paste this into your AI tool

Here are my rough notes from a retail team briefing: [paste your notes]. I direct a boutique with a team of thirty. Turn this into a short action list grouped by person, with a deadline against each item where one was mentioned. Flag anything that was discussed but where no owner was named.
Survey04

Gartner: only a fifth of large firms have AI running across business units

Gartner found that only 22% of large organisations have scaled AI across several business units. It surveyed more than 1,300 leaders at firms with over $50 million in revenue, between January and April. Spending plans are undented, with 85% of technology leaders raising AI budgets next year. About 11% of respondents could not say what they spent on AI in 2025. Gartner's Tina Nunno warned that weak measurement tied to business outcomes wastes resources. Firms that track returns continuously and shut down weak projects reported gains on 81% of initiatives. Popular uses such as cybersecurity, threat detection and IT service desk automation often return less. The best returns came from IT asset and cost optimisation, synthetic data generation, and automated code generation. Separate reports from Infosys and Deloitte found similar gaps in measurement and readiness.

Why it matters for you

Head office will fund AI tools you did not ask for this year. The survey says the winners measure returns and kill weak projects.

  • Firms that tracked outcomes continuously reported gains on most initiatives
  • Popular uses like IT service desks returned less than expected
  • Your flagship is a good pilot site precisely because sales and stock numbers are already measured daily

Try this

Pick one number — repeat purchase rate or stock availability — and record it now as a baseline before any tool arrives.

Paste this into your AI tool

I direct a flagship retail boutique. I want a simple baseline sheet so I can prove whether any new tool actually helps. Here is what I currently measure: [list your weekly numbers, e.g. sales per head, repeat client visits, stock-outs]. Suggest three measures I should record weekly for the next quarter, say exactly how to capture each one without new software, and note what would count as a real improvement versus normal seasonal noise.

Gartner warns ad platforms' AI works for the seller, not the buyer

Gartner expects most advertising money to move through self-serve platforms where AI shapes buying, costs and outcomes by 2028. Eric Schmitt, a Gartner analyst, warns marketers against handing those systems too much control. He argues the platforms' AI serves the seller, not the buyer. Recommendations often amount to advising advertisers to spend more. Schmitt says a human should stay in the loop on budget decisions. He notes the platforms still do not measure or work well across each other. His advice is to cut the number of variables and focus on the largest platforms. He also suggests bringing finance colleagues into the assessment. Independent measurement providers should check campaign results rather than platform reporting. Junior staff can operate the consoles, but experienced oversight remains necessary.

Why it matters for you

Your boutique's local campaigns run on the same self-serve platforms. Their recommendations mostly amount to spend more.

  • The advice is to keep a human deciding budget, and to cut the number of variables you test
  • Independent measurement beats platform reporting on whether footfall actually moved
  • At your size the ad budget likely sits with marketing, so this is a question to raise, not a switch to flip

Try this

Ask marketing which independent source confirms your boutique's campaign results, not the platform's own dashboard.

Build this

Every week, one small thing to build with AI in something you actually care about. No work in it. Five minutes to set up, and worth keeping if it earns a second run.

A working plan for one shelf you already own — what goes where, what gets moved forward, and what stays put until it sells.

Five minutes to set up

I have a set of things I already own and want a plan for using them, not buying more. The subject is [name it, e.g. my winter wardrobe, my pantry, my houseplants]. Here is what I actually have: [list it in one line]. Build me a plan that uses only these items. Do not suggest anything I would have to buy, and do not offer alternatives. Give me a sequence with a reason for each position, and name the one item that should wait and why.
  1. Have the list ready in one line from memory — do not go and take an inventory first.
  2. Run it in ChatGPT, where you can push back in the same chat.
  3. Check it did not sneak in something you never listed, which is the usual failure.
  4. When a position looks wrong, tell it which one and ask it to reorder without changing the rest.

Yours arrives Thursday.
