Instacart and Shipt each launched an AI shopping assistant on Wednesday. Instacart's is called Clementine and Shipt's is Ask Shipt, on its app and website. Both can fill a grocery cart from a conversation or an uploaded photo. Clementine also writes recipes, finds savings and reorders items automatically. It uses past orders, stated preferences such as gluten-free, and store inventory levels. Clementine uses the same technology as Cart Assistant, which Instacart launched for retailers a year ago. Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group and Woodman's Markets now offer Cart Assistant. Aldi US, The Save Mart Companies and Stew Leonard's will follow. Ask Shipt can stay within a stated budget and surface promotions. Shoppers can edit its cart before checkout.
What changed
Instacart's Cart Assistant ran on retailers' own websites, not Instacart's marketplace.
What it unlocks
Building a grocery cart by describing a meal or uploading a photo of a dish.
What you need to act on it
