Google published the first edition of its AI & Economy ATLAS (Activity, Task, Landscape, and Adoption Study) on July 23, 2026, a de-identified study of usage across the Gemini app, AI Mode and the Gemini API, products it says reach more than 1 billion people monthly. ATLAS v1.0 draws on 15 million aggregated interactions spanning more than 150 countries, 140 languages, 800 occupations and 4,000 tasks. Reported findings: workplace use covers 68% of US occupations representing 90% of employment but only about 21% of tasks in a typical job; fewer than 10% of work interactions fully automate a task; non-routine cognitive tasks appear at 65% of work interactions versus 35% in the economy overall; over 86% of interactions occur outside work; English accounts for roughly a third of conversations. The dataset was processed with DeepMind's OCTO clustering tool, with contributions acknowledged from Diane Coyle (Cambridge) and David Autor (MIT).
