Regulation2026-10-21

The Law Society published a 58-page practice note on AI use in legal work. Solicitors must tell clients how they use AI. They must also check AI work meets professional standards. Professional responsibility cannot be transferred to AI systems. Solicitors remain accountable for all work with clients and courts. Paid AI tools must be scrutinised as closely as free ones. Firms must assess data storage, sharing and jurisdiction of AI providers. AI cannot reliably validate its own accuracy. The note warns against relying on AI to verify AI outputs.

What changed

No formal guidance existed on AI use disclosure to clients.

What it unlocks

Solicitors can now ask clients to disclose AI-generated material passed to them.
