Uber and Wayve began supervised self-driving rides in London on 3 September. It is the first autonomous ride-hailing service in the United Kingdom. Riders booking UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort may be matched with a Wayve car at no extra cost. The cars are electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles fitted with Wayve's driving software and sensors. A licensed private hire driver sits onboard to oversee every trip. Riders can decline the match and switch to a human-driven car. Trips cover anywhere in London except airports, and the fleet starts small. Uber and Wayve plan Nissan LEAF robotaxis in Tokyo later this year. Uber says it works with over 30 self-driving partners and aims for up to 15 cities by the end of 2026.
