More than a dozen civil society groups asked the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether AI companies buying, scanning and physically destroying books to train their models is an unfair method of competition. The signatories include Demand Progress Education Fund, the Consumer Federation of America and the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. The letter is a request only, and the FTC has not said whether it will open an inquiry.
