Regulation2026-09-23

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act. The bill bans development of artificial superintelligence. It pauses advanced AI development until federal oversight is in place. A new cabinet-level Department of Artificial Intelligence would enforce the ban. The department would monitor frontier AI systems for dangerous capabilities. It would supervise removal of capabilities like bypassing shutdown commands. It would also supervise destruction of artificial superintelligence. Violations could trigger the corporate death penalty. Individuals could face up to 20 years in prison. The U.S. would pursue international agreements to ban superintelligence globally.
