Release2026-07-29

Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, an openly downloadable model whose full weights are published under its own licence. It handles text, images and video in one model and can hold about a million words-worth of text in view at once, and Moonshot reports benchmark scores close to the leading closed models from Anthropic and OpenAI on coding and agent tasks. Running it privately needs very large GPU capacity, so most users will reach it through Moonshot's API or hosted providers.

What changed

Moonshot's previous open release, Kimi K2, was text-only and smaller in scale.

What it unlocks

Running a frontier-scale model that reads text, images and video with a million-token context on private infrastructure, or through Moonshot's API.

  • 2.8T total parameters, 104B active
  • 1,048,576-token context window
  • 16 of 896 experts per token

What you need to act on it

  • substantial GPU capacity for self-hosting, or an API account at platform.kimi.ai
  • acceptance of the Kimi K3 License
