OpenAI says its agents solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. It is one of seven Millennium Prize Problems set by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. The equations describe how fluids flow, and the proof shows they can break down. OpenAI used an internal model that it says beats its recently released Astra model. It does not plan to claim the million-dollar prize. NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic's Levent Alpoge had posted a related proof days earlier. Buckmaster published a statement saying OpenAI staff offered to co-author only if Alpoge was excluded. OpenAI denies its agents or staff used their work or transcripts. It gave no answer on whether models were trained on those transcripts. An OpenAI researcher said a rumour of their effort prompted the company to pursue the problem.
