In a podcast interview, SemiAnalysis founder Dylan Patel argued that OpenAI and Anthropic will take about half of all newly built computing capacity next year and most of the world's usable capacity by late 2028, because they earn far more revenue per unit of capacity than anyone else and can outbid rivals. He said both firms have turned profitable and expects the price of renting capacity to rise sharply. These are forecasts and estimates, not disclosed figures.

What changed

OpenAI and Anthropic were loss-making, venture-funded buyers of a minority of new data-center capacity.

  • ~$1T AI capex this year, >$2T in 2028
  • 30% of new compute to the two labs now
  • 40-50% next year
  • $10-15M to as high as $50M revenue per MW
