OpenAI routes licensed publisher content through a separate ChatGPT pipeline. Partner material enters as pre-generated summaries. These summaries appear ahead of ordinary web results. A researcher identified 12 publishers across 43 domains in this pipeline. The pipeline covers news, recipes, product reviews and buying guides. Partner summaries took 70% of top three positions in a 1,000-case sample. They took 23% of positions seven to ten. OpenAI told partners in 2024 they would get more prominent display. A Hamburg study later found Springer titles appearing more often in ChatGPT’s web interface than its API. Partner content is still not always cited accurately.
