ETH Zurich researchers built a robotic hand that walks on its fingertips. It supports its own weight and moves across many surfaces. The hand can press keys and play a computer game. It uses an off-the-shelf model with added battery, computer and sensors. The team trained it with reinforcement learning in simulation. The hand can navigate confined spaces without an arm. It could augment full humanoid robots in the future.

What it unlocks

A robotic hand can move on its own and interact with objects without an attached arm.
