OpenAI researchers reportedly used an internal model to break the Navier-Stokes equations, one of six million-dollar open problems in mathematics. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster published an account of events late on Monday. He and Levent Alpoege, an Anthropic employee, had proved a related result for the simpler Euler equations on 15 August. Buckmaster alleges that word of their method reached OpenAI, which then finished the job with a single prompt. He says OpenAI offered him sole authorship and wanted Alpoege excluded. OpenAI denied the allegations at a press conference. The method relies on a term most experts leave out, so some may dispute that the problem is truly solved. Buckmaster credits the key ideas to Diego Cordoba and Luis Martinez-Zoroa. The account comes from his own published statement.
