Microsoft plans to more than triple its data centre capacity to about 38 gigawatts by 2032. Bloomberg News reported the target, citing people familiar with the plans. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed it. About a third of the future footprint would run AI-specific chips, against roughly 2GW today. Microsoft added 1GW of capacity in the quarter ended 30 June and 88 data centres across fiscal 2026. Azure and other cloud revenue grew 43% year-on-year, and Microsoft said demand still exceeds available capacity. Capital spending reached $41 billion in the quarter, with about two-thirds on chips. Microsoft is building a 2GW campus in Pecos, Texas, initially powered by an on-site gas plant. The International Energy Agency expects global data centre electricity use to reach about 945 terawatt-hours by 2030.
