Release2026-10-05

Google Docs now lets users view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files natively. Google Drive now shows rendered previews of Markdown files. Users no longer need to convert files to Docs format. Formatting, comments, and structure are preserved during editing. Real-time editing and commenting tools remain available. The rollout starts on October 5, 2026 for all Google Workspace users. It applies to both personal and Workspace accounts. No admin or user settings are required to enable the feature.

What changed

Markdown files had to be imported and converted into Docs, often losing formatting, comments, and structure.

What it unlocks

Opening, editing, and collaborating on Markdown files directly in Google Docs without file conversion.
