Stripe agreed on 19 August 2026 to buy OpenRouter, the service that lets companies reach more than 400 AI models through a single connection, in a deal valued above $7 billion. Combined with Stripe's earlier purchase of usage-billing firm Metronome, it puts Stripe on both sides of how AI is sold and bought. The analysis is commentary; no product change has been announced for existing OpenRouter customers.

What changed

OpenRouter was an independent model-routing intermediary, separate from Stripe's payments and usage-billing stack.

  • deal valued at over $7 billion
