Consumers are using AI agents like Meta’s Muse to shop and pay. Banks are worried about bot traffic risks in customer accounts. Amazon has blocked Muse from its retail sites. Visa, Mastercard and American Express have each set different agent transaction rules. Visa’s approach uses a directory of known agents. Mastercard’s uses tokenized payment credentials. Stripe and Google have also introduced agentic payment protocols. American Express and Stripe now offer consumer purchase protection for agentic transactions. Amex requires agent registration and a purchase intent document for disputes. Stripe’s protection covers U.S. purchases via its Link wallet. Industry leaders say liability rules and audit trails are still missing. Wells Fargo warns customers they may be liable for agent errors if they share account details. Early Warning Services CEO Cameron Fowler calls for clear liability and consumer intent rules.
