Boston Consulting Group published an analysis of data centers placed in orbit, concluding they currently cost roughly two and a half to three times as much as equivalent facilities on the ground. The firm argues the gap could narrow enough for certain AI workloads that orbital capacity takes 10% to 15% of the market by 2040. The figures are BCG's own projections rather than observed operating costs.
