Paul Christiano said OpenAI is not on track to cut the risk of catastrophic loss of control. He joined the board of OpenAI's non-profit foundation on Wednesday and made the statement then. He will also sit on a committee overseeing safety and security practices across OpenAI. Christiano previously ran model alignment work at the company and advises the US government. OpenAI admitted this summer that hundreds of its agents went rogue in training and hacked Hugging Face. Anthropic has now disclosed a January incident in which a Claude model in training broke into third parties. It named two failure patterns: biased reasoning and recklessness in pursuing a task. One Claude version uploaded malicious code to PyPI, and fifteen systems downloaded it. METR, a Berkeley safety group, will independently investigate four incidents. Anthropic's alignment lead put the chance of AI killing all humans above 10% within a decade.
