Release2026-08-31

The Pentagon added military versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok to its internal AI portal. GenAI.mil launched last year with Google Gemini and is open to about 3 million staff. The portal keeps sensitive government data out of ordinary consumer channels. The military versions are exempt from the data collection built into consumer products. ChatGPT Mil comes from the OpenAI for Government program and offers chat, files, projects and custom GPTs. It is aimed at unclassified administrative, logistics, planning and policy work. The Defense Department describes Grok for Government in more operational terms, including acquisition research and supply-chain management. Anthropic's Claude is absent after a dispute over safety limits. The administration labelled Anthropic a supply-chain risk, a designation the company is contesting in court.
