Google launched a prototype satellite for Project Suncatcher on October 1. It completed commissioning and ran early machine learning tests. This week it received the first AI response from a data center class TPU in orbit. The team uplinked a prompt to an onboard Gemma 4 model to generate a haiku. The satellite downlinked the poem during a pass over Svalbard, Norway. They also tested space-themed limericks and telemetry prompts. Next they will evaluate TPU performance under thermal stress and radiation. The goal is twin interconnected satellites in 2027.
What changed
No AI response had been received from a data center class TPU in orbit before.
What it unlocks
Running AI workloads on a TPU in space.
