OpenAI has begun letting a small number of its largest enterprise customers pay only when its AI completes a task, such as handling a customer support conversation end to end, according to a report in The Information. The arrangement is limited to selected accounts and OpenAI has not announced it, so terms, customers and prices remain unknown. Intercom, Zendesk and Salesforce have already moved parts of their pricing in this direction.
What changed
OpenAI sold enterprise capacity by the token, billing per model and per call regardless of whether a task succeeded.
What it unlocks
Paying for a completed support interaction rather than for every attempt, shifting the cost of failed attempts to the vendor.
- $0.99 per Intercom resolution
- $1.20-$1.50 per Zendesk resolution
- 43% prefer consumption pricing
- 27% prefer outcome pricing
What you need to act on it
- a select large enterprise account with OpenAI
- a negotiated agreement
