Release2026-10-05

Google Docs now lets users view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files natively. Google Drive now shows rendered previews of Markdown files. Users no longer need to convert files to Docs format. Formatting, comments, and structure are preserved. Agents and users can collaborate without raw syntax or manual conversions. Real-time editing and commenting tools remain available. The rollout starts on October 5, 2026. It applies to all Google Workspace customers and personal accounts. Admins have no control over this feature. End users have no settings to configure.

What changed

Markdown files had to be imported and converted into Docs, often losing formatting, comments, and structure.

What it unlocks

Opening, editing, and collaborating on Markdown files directly in Google Docs without changing the file type.
