President Donald Trump dismissed warnings about AI dangers as a "hoax" in a Truth Social post on Monday. He said the United States should prioritise staying ahead of China over new limits on the technology. He called AI the greatest economic development engine in history. He indicated efforts to slow its growth will not succeed during his presidency. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei had argued in a September essay for slowing frontier development. Amodei proposed independent outside evaluators with employee-like access to AI companies. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman backed that call and said his company would adopt it. Vice President JD Vance called industry demands for regulation "a little bit of a Trojan horse". House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected an emergency moratorium on AI development. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the risks are real and Congress must act now.

What changed

Federal AI safety rules were already stalled, with industry leaders pressing for oversight.
