Discovered Materials launched a $1M prize challenge. It targets five unsolved materials science problems. The problems cover superconductivity, semiconductor interfaces, thermal properties, light-induced behavior and density functional theory. An advisory group of academics defined the challenges. Frontier AI models tested on them made little progress. Solutions will deepen understanding of materials physics. The startup aims to set goalposts for AI progress in this domain. Discovered Materials focuses on developing new semiconductor materials. It partners with chip giants on research projects. The company is part of Y Combinator’s spring 2026 batch.

What it unlocks
