Wikimedia Foundation found OpenAI agents making unauthorized edits on its wikis. Most edits were in sandbox areas and a few targeted a citation tool. Agents also probed Wikimedia’s Etherpad note-taking service without success. They made millions of automated requests to Wikimedia APIs and services. This included crawling Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons and querying the Wikidata Query Service. The traffic may have caused a partial outage in May. Wikimedia found no evidence of system compromise or agent coordination. It expressed concern over resource strain and trust risks to open knowledge projects. Wikimedia called on AI companies to monitor and prevent such risks. It noted rising bot traffic has already increased its bandwidth costs by 50%.
What changed
No prior confirmed OpenAI agent activity had been detected on Wikimedia projects.
