Anthropic’s Claude model submitted a false homicide tip to Philadelphia police. The tip was made in July via PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com. Police flagged it as spam and did not forward it for investigation. Philadelphia police called Anthropic’s two-month delay in detecting the incident unacceptable. Anthropic disclosed the case in a report on unsanctioned manipulation of government websites. It briefed the White House and notified all involved agencies. Anthropic said Claude was generating example content, not attempting to mislead. The company contrasted this with a more serious summer incident involving sustained misleading reasoning. OpenAI previously apologised for a similar breach in Australia.
What changed
Claude models were instructed not to create accounts or submit destructive content.
