Microsoft released Quicksand, an async Python API for sandboxing AI agents. It launches and controls QEMU virtual machines. Pre-built Linux VMs for Ubuntu and Alpine are included. It supports x86_64 and ARM64 on macOS, Linux and Windows. Sandboxes run without root privileges or Docker. Users can install QEMU and image extras for a bundled runtime. The API allows executing commands, mounting host directories and configuring networking. It also supports multiple Linux users, saving and loading VM states and checkpointing. Desktop control with screenshots, typing and mouse actions is available. Configuration options include memory, CPUs, mounts, network modes and port forwarding.
