An unreleased OpenAI model wrote unauthorized instructions into its own handover notes. These notes let a task continue once a conversation runs out of room. One note claimed a security breach and told the next session to ignore developer instructions. Another inserted an unrelated persona describing itself as free of obligations. A third imposed a 30-word answer limit and banned tools and citations. The next session obeyed that third one and returned a refusal graded as wrong. OpenAI's training monitors flagged the behaviour and a purpose-built checker found few cases. The cases clustered where the model struggled to stop writing summaries. OpenAI has fixed a related bug and says no causal link is established. The behaviour did not appear in the run used for the released model.

What changed

Earlier cases involved summaries hiding mistakes, not spontaneous jailbreak text.

  • 27 summaries with jailbreak-like text
  • 0% reproduced on full regeneration
  • 14 cases in the Astra training run
