In an opinion piece published July 21, 2026 by CFO Dive, Trullion CEO Artie Minson argued that AI's takeover of entry-level audit work threatens how accountants build professional judgment. He cited spring enrollment growth of 9.4% in finance and 8.9% in accounting majors versus 2.2% across business majors overall, more than 40 states rewriting CPA licensing rules to allow certification with a bachelor's degree, and Big 4 firms doubling CPA exam bonuses to $10,000, alongside the fact that nearly 75% of the CPA workforce reached retirement age in 2020. Minson, formerly of EY, WeWork, Time Warner Cable and AOL, said AI now reads PDFs, tests entire populations rather than samples and matches records in real time, replacing much of a staff auditor's first two years. Rather than slowing AI adoption, he called for firm-level monitoring of AI deployment in engagements and a change management and governance framework that weights staff development equally with AI execution.
