The Department of Homeland Security banned DeepSeek for civilian federal agencies. It ordered immediate removal of the model and its affiliates. The ban covers all IT products and services from parent company Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence. Secretary Markwayne Mullin cited data privacy and national security risks in a June 26 letter. DeepSeek stores data in China, where authorities can access it under national security laws. The model collects personally identifiable information and digital fingerprints from users. Agencies must exclude DeepSeek from future procurements and remove existing instances. Exceptions require a 60-day notice and compelling justification. Agencies are encouraged to enhance security controls during removal. DeepSeek is the only Chinese AI model named in the order.

What changed

Federal agencies could use DeepSeek at their own discretion.
