In an interview published July 16, 2026 by CIO Dive and republished by Supply Chain Dive, Walmart SVP of supply chain technology Indira Uppuluri described how the retailer's supply chain organization uses machine learning, large language models and AI agents. Uppuluri said her teams have access to popular commercial and open-source models, with data science and optimization groups building custom tools, and that agents let associates view network-wide resource use rather than one node at a time to find bottlenecks, balancing assortment, speed and cost. Modeling and digital twin technology simulate facility closures, transportation delays and demand shifts, with transportation teams running virtual replicas of the logistics network under stress. Walmart partners with OpenAI and Google on role-specific AI certifications through its associate platform Squiggly, following an earlier effort to reach 2 million employees with AI training.
