GitHub retired six models from most GitHub Copilot experiences on 1 September 2026. The removal covers Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. The retired models are Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Opus 4.5, Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Raptor Mini. GitHub names a suggested replacement for each one. Claude Sonnet 4.6 stays available to individual subscribers on annual plans. GitHub asks users to point workflows and integrations at supported models. Enterprise administrators may need to enable the replacements in their Copilot model policies. Once enabled, the model appears in the Copilot Chat model picker in VS Code and on github.com. No action is needed to remove the retired models.
