Google Quantum AI demonstrated magic state cultivation on its Willow processor. The method cuts errors by about 40 times compared to uncultivated states. It achieved a record 99.99% logical fidelity for T-states. The work solves a long-standing bottleneck in quantum computing. Magic states previously consumed up to 95% of a machine’s capacity. The team also showed compatibility between color codes and surface codes. The paper was published in Science. Further scaling is still needed for practical use.

What changed

Magic state creation consumed up to 95% of a quantum computer’s capacity.

What it unlocks

Efficiently creating high-quality magic states on real quantum hardware.

  • 40x error reduction
  • 99.99% logical fidelity for T-states
