Incident2026-09-29

Apple considered laying off about 5,000 support employees. It believed AI-powered phone and web agents could take over their tasks. The plan is now on hold indefinitely. Apple is not currently looking to take this step. It has already laid off some middle managers, including directors. Callers to AppleCare in the US and Canada are now routed to an AI assistant. The assistant can answer questions and give troubleshooting steps. It can transfer callers to a human if needed. Apple may revisit layoffs or reduce hiring for AppleCare roles later.
