Cursor published details of how its automatic model picker works and reported further savings since its July launch. Its Auto Intelligence mode now matches or beats the satisfaction of the strongest single model it offers at 68% lower cost, and Auto Balance runs at 41% lower cost. The system judges each request's difficulty from patterns in past developer usage, so results are measured from user behaviour rather than benchmarks.
What changed
At the router's 22 July launch, the two automatic modes saved less: 18 and 8 percentage points less on cost respectively.

Letting Cursor pick a model per request instead of pinning every request to one expensive frontier model.
