OpenAI launched a Grid Protectors Program. It will free up to 1,000 megawatts during extreme weather or emergencies. The pilot starts at a new data center in Effingham County, Georgia. OpenAI frames its AI data centers as compute campuses to improve public perception. It claims steady year-round demand can lower costs for customers. The program aims to reduce electricity demand when the grid is under strain. OpenAI will work with policymakers and utilities for future arrangements. It is also building Stargate data centers with Oracle and SoftBank in Texas and New Mexico.
