A developer implemented x402 to charge AI agents one cent per page crawl. Five testnet payments settled on 15 September, including one from Claude Code. The site returns HTTP 402 and unlocks content after payment. Each transaction has a public blockchain receipt. Cloudflare announced Wallets and Monetization Gateway for similar use cases. Wallets are not yet functional for payments despite handle reservations. Google separately runs an AI contribution pilot paying publishers for content used in AI answers. Publishers receive monthly earnings without breakdowns. The x402 demo uses a Cloudflare Worker and Hono middleware. It charges only a specific research page. Human visitors see a paywall explanation with a free preview option. The agent script enforces per-call and daily spending limits. Refusals occur if the price exceeds the agent’s budget.
