Alphabet is designing a new server chip, internally dubbed "Frozen v2", intended to run its Gemini models more efficiently, according to a July 20, 2026 report by The Information citing anonymous sources. The chip is slated for release sometime in 2028 and could be six to 10 times more efficient than Google's existing AI chips as measured by tokens generated per unit of power. Google did not confirm or deny the report, saying its teams constantly research new innovations and that not every project reaches production, and pointing to its co-design of hardware and software. Alphabet's stock rose about 3% on the Monday morning after the report, ahead of earnings later that week; Google has said it plans to spend $180-190 billion on its AI buildout. OpenAI unveiled its first custom inference chip, "Jalapeño", in June 2026, and Anthropic was reported in early July to be discussing a chipmaking partnership with Samsung.
