Los Angeles Unified has barred students from using generative AI on district devices this school year. Senior administrators imposed the moratorium on their own authority. They said it reflected a unanimous June board vote limiting student screen time. That policy bars screens until second grade and widens access as students get older. Board members Kelly Gonez and Nick Melvoin said they only learned of the AI ban at a committee meeting. Melvoin said the board never authorised it. Teachers may still use the tools, and non-generative uses such as captioning and translation continue. No district rule yet covers student-owned devices. New York City separately banned student-facing generative AI through grade eight and banned companion chatbots in all grades. Parent group Schools Beyond Screens L.A. and Common Sense Media praised the Los Angeles move.
