Researchers used AI to analyze 101,243 PET-CT scans of adult patients. Detectable brown fat linked to lower rates of heart and metabolic diseases. It also linked to fewer psychiatric conditions. Higher brown fat activity in the axillary region tied to better metabolic results. Losartan increased brown fat activity in lab and mouse tests. Its effect on human brown fat remains untested. The study could not prove brown fat prevents disease. Findings appeared in Nature.

What changed

Manual BAT quantification from whole-body scans was labor-intensive and limited to small studies.
