Lyft's Flexdrive unit is opening its largest vehicle depot in Nashville in October to clean, charge and maintain Waymo driverless taxis, with about 70 staff, roughly half of them former Lyft drivers. Managers say driverless fleets need more hands-on work than rentals because cars are touched two or three times a day rather than every few months. Human judgement still decides when a car is fit for passengers.

What changed

Lyft's Flexdrive serviced rental cars kept by drivers for 14 to 16 weeks, with about 100 staff covering 15,000 vehicles.

  • 70 full-time staff at new depot
  • 80,000 sq ft, opening October
  • ~50 Waymos operating in Nashville
  • 8m US jobs realistically at risk
