Amplitude initially exposed 96 tools, one per API endpoint. This caused context bloat and forced agents to steer through overlapping tools. One customer saw 57% of its 200K context window used just listing tools. Most clients load every tool definition upfront by default. Tool search is not widely supported or reliable. Agents often pick the wrong tool, especially with similar names. Amplitude rebuilt its catalog around outcomes, not endpoints. It merged tools by object, not API structure. Cohort tools went from nine to one. A new search tool covers multiple products in one call. Chart creation now needs one tool instead of three. Skills were moved to separate markdown files to reduce context. A CLI tool handles rarely used API operations.
What changed
Each API endpoint was exposed as a separate tool, causing context bloat and overlapping functionality.
What it unlocks
Agents can now complete tasks in fewer calls with reduced context usage and clearer tool selection.
- 96 tools initially
- 57% context used by one customer
- 20% of data queries led to chart rendering
- <5% of data queries led to saving
