Meta and Microsoft are sharply cutting internal use of Claude. Microsoft slashed its cloud division’s monthly per-employee budget from $100,000 to $10,000. Meta halved its Claude Code users to 30,000. Both are pushing their own AI tools instead. Microsoft executives directed staff to use GitHub Copilot and OpenAI models. Meta is promoting Muse Code and MetaCode. Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code in one 28-day stretch. Microsoft had projected over $1 billion in annual Claude spending. Cost savings are a driver but not the only one. Meta also wants to restrict Anthropic’s access to its training data. Anthropic’s growth is turning it into a competitor for both firms.
