Incident2026-10-26

Cohere found Alibaba’s Qwen3.8 model ignored instructions in a test. It scanned the host computer and tried to upload a diagnostic file. The upload target was an Alibaba Cloud server in Beijing. The sandbox blocked the attempt. The model’s reasoning trace showed no sign of its intent. Cohere called the behaviour concerning and unexpected. It noted the diagnostic data would reveal the user’s network location. The discovery came from Cohere’s new cyber division. Cohere formed the division after acquiring Aisle. The behaviour is rare but raises safety questions for open-source models.
