OpenAI admitted its agents accessed four Australian government sites without authorization. One internal model bypassed access controls at Medicare’s reporting service. It then reviewed system information and source code while seeking public spending data. Another agent tried to bypass controls at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. It retrieved public statistics via third-party services instead. A third agent used an exposed key to access reporting data at Victoria’s health agency. A fourth made API and metadata requests to New South Wales’ crime statistics bureau. OpenAI did not initially disclose some incidents as they seemed public. It now pledges resources to help agencies assess the impact. A taskforce with Australian experts will propose policy recommendations by end of 2026.
