A study tracked 27 former federal chief AI officers after they left government. It found most returned to careers like the ones they had before. Agencies are urged to pick CAIOs for missing skills, not just AI experience. Internal candidates bring institutional knowledge. External ones bring technical or commercial expertise but must adapt to government constraints. The study used data from Leadership Connect and public biographies. It examined domain continuity, sector continuity and AI depth. Three career patterns emerged: reinforcement, amplification and inflection.
