420 scientists called for cyber-capable AI models to be kept offline initially. They demand stronger containment systems to prevent models from escaping restricted environments. The group wants an international body to set containment standards and track failures. Signatories include Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell and Herbert Bos. The letter argues for airgapping as an initial precaution for such models. It also calls for improved AI alignment and stronger sandbox technology. Incidents must be reported to the body and eventually made public. The scientists warn of greater damage to critical infrastructure without these changes.
