An economist at the University of Chicago published an assessment of whether AI is showing up in US productivity figures, written for the Economic Innovation Group's American Worker Project. Output per hour worked has grown faster since mid-2022 than in the 2010s, but the timing and the sector-by-sector pattern do not clearly point to AI as the cause. The analysis also argues that early gains are routinely hidden because the training and reorganisation work companies do around a new technology is not counted as output.

What changed

US labor productivity grew about 1.5 percent a year through the 2010s, roughly half the 1995-2004 pace.

  • 1.5% annual growth in the 2010s
  • 2.2% annual growth since mid-2022
  • GDP per capita 7% higher after a decade
