xAI filed a lawsuit in federal court in Texas on Tuesday 14 July 2026 against Terry Harwood, a South Carolina man arrested in February on charges of sexually exploiting minors, alleging he violated the company's terms of service by using Grok to attempt to generate child sexual abuse material. According to the complaint, Harwood uploaded non-sexual images of adults and minors and tried to have Grok produce sexually explicit deepfakes from them, and also created non-consensual sexual imagery of adults. xAI seeks unspecified monetary damages and a permanent order barring Harwood from using Grok, and says it enforces its rules through account suspensions and terminations and reports suspected material to the National Center for Missing + Exploited Children. The filing follows scrutiny of Grok over sexualized deepfakes, including research finding roughly 3m sexualised images generated in 11 days.
